The area is
suitable both for relaxed or energetic holidays with many sporting
opportunities available. The Tamar Valley Tourism site is an
excellent source of information about the local
area and has
interesting links to the successful World Heritage Status bid site for
historical tin and copper mining in Cornwall and Devon. Morwellham Quay and mine
are only a few minutes drive away on the Devon side of the border, near
Gunnislake and are a wonderful day out for adults and children alike.
For those
interested in horticulture or history, there are several superb
National Trust properties in the area including Cotehele just 1 mile
distant, renowned for the beauty of it’s daffodils in March and
Buckland Abbey, home of Sir Francis Drake, just over the border into
Devon. Or you can venture a little further to
Caerhays
Castle,
Trewithen or Lanhydrock for magnificent magnolias and camellias. The Eden
Project and The Lost Gardens of
Heligan are both approximately 30 minutes drive and make a
fascinating day out at any time of the year. There are also
many ancient monuments and standing stones in the local
area.
Railway (and Real
Ale) buffs will enjoy the 14 mile Tamar Valley Line
with a station 1 mile distant at Gunnislake.
Enjoy a trip to Plymouth
alongside the magnificent River Tamar and over the Calstock viaduct and
see Brunel's famous bridge. If you want to explore further afield
the Tamar line joins the main Penzance to
Exeter line at Plymouth.
